Maria Sharapova went into Wimbledon final after beating Sabine Lisicki both in the semifinals, Thursday, June 30, 2011. In the final, Sharapova will be challenged Petra Kvitova.
Sharapova had experienced difficulties at the beginning of the match against Lisicki. Russian fifth seed was 3-0 down before finally winning in 12 of 16 games remaining. Sharapova eventually won 6-4 and 6-3.
"He (Lisicki) played well. The match weight. I just need to focus. I managed to get up and stay focused until the end of the match," Sharapova said after the game as reported by AP.
This is the second final in the Champions Wimbledon Sharapova after the previous win over Serena Williams in 2004. It was the first Grand Slam title achieved by the 24-year tennis player.
Sharapova next will be challenged tennis player of the Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova, who beat fifth seed in the semifinals Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 3-6 and 6-2. This is the first time Kvitova stepped into the final Grand Slam.
Although more favored in the final which will take place Saturday, June 2, 2011, but reluctant to underestimate Sharapova Kvitova. Moreover Sharapova assess the type of game left-hander is difficult to predict.
"He (Kvitova) players are smart because he's a good player on grass. He was left-handed, he was serving very well and he played good tennis," Sharapova said about Kvitova.
Kvitova left-hander is the first since Martina Navratilova in 1994 capable of stepping into the Wimbledon final. Only Navratilova Ann Jones and left-hander who could win Wimbledon.
Kvitova admitted more confident to face the final after receiving support from Navratilova, who witnessed the semifinal against Azarenka.
"We met in the locker room and he (Navratilova) told me 'congratulations and success for the finals'. Could meet and talk with him is a pleasant," said Kvitova.
