8. Chelsea appoint former Brazil boss Luis Filipe Scolari following the departure of Avram Grant two months earlier. The London club announce the deal whilst Scolari is still the manager of the Portuguese national team (During Euro 2008), much to the annoyance of Portuguese officials.

5. The minute silence which marked the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. Manchester United took on their bitter rivals Manchester City on the day United remembered the victims of Munich. It was feared before the game that the minute silence may be disrupted by the City fans, however it was impeccably observed and the away fans were rewarded for a famous 2-1 victory on the day.
3. Spain beat Germany 1-0 to win the European Championships final. It was the final that everyone wanted. The powerhouse of Germany against the side that always promises much but never really delivers, Spain. It was Liverpool's Fernando Torres who handed Spain the trophy with a delicate dink over former Arsenal keeper Jens Lehman. The victory, which was met with joyous scenes in the streets of Spain, was the first major trophy the Spaniards had won in over 40 years.
