Another big shock yeserday saw Venus Williams crash to Tsvetana Pironkova.
Petra Kvitova saved five match points to earn her semi final place.
Kim Clijsters made too many errors and was beaten in 3 sets by Vera Zvonareva.

Strange tournament on the women's side. With the top players winning easily early on who would have thought Thursday's semi final line up would be;
Serena Williams (1) v Petra Kvitova
Vera Zvonareva (21) v Tsvetana Pironkova

Wimbledon women's tennis news Day 7

Kim Clijsters won the Belgian duel against Justine Henin. Justine is way short of the level she was at when she was winning Grand Slams.

Serena beat Maria. It was much closer than I had thought. I expected Serena to win quite comfortable.

I never saw Venus's match but was surprised she appeared to have so much trouble with someone ranked 92 in the world and especially on grass.

The biggest shock of the day saw the third seed Caroline Wozniacki thrashed by the 62nd ranked Petra Kvitova in 46 minutes.

Here are the complete 4th round results results.
Serena Williams (1) beat Maria Sharapova (16) 7-6 (11-9) 6-4
Kim Clijsters (8) beat Justine Henin (17) 2-6 6-2 6-3
Petra Kvitova beat Caroline Wozniacki (3) 6-2 6-0
Venus Williams (2) beat Jarmila Groth 6-4 7-6 (7-5)
Kaia Kanepi beat Klara Zakopalova 6-2 6-4
Tsvetana Pironkova beat Marion Bartoli (11) 6-4 6-4
Vera Zvonareva (21) beat Jelena Jankovic (4) 6-1 3-0 (ret)

Wimbledon women's tennis news Day 6

Today is a rest day at Wimbledon. Although I don't think it is needed by any of the top women apart from Maria Sharapova who had a tough match. 3 of the 5 listed below had one close set yesterday so at least they got a bit of a work out. Here are the main results.

Serena Williams (1) beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-0 7-5
Maria Sharapova (16) beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 7-5 6-3
Agnieszka Radwanska (7) beat Sara Errani 6-3 6-1

Wimbledon women's tennis news Day 4

Another easy day for some of the top women players. Serena Williams (2) beat Anna Chakvetadze 6-0 6-1, Caroline Wozniacki (3) beat Kai-Chen Chang 6-4 6-3 and Maria Sharapova (16) beat Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-1 6-4. But Daniela Hantuchova (24) went out to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1 2-6 4-6.

Although this is a women's tennis blog I must give a mention to John Isner and Nicolas Mahut who played the longest ever tennis match, 11 hours and five minutes. The final set was longer than the previous longest match ever. They took eight hours and 11 minutes just to complete the fifth set. The final score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68 to Isner. It would be nice to see those two guys somehow make a lot of money out of this, they deserve it. Serena will probaly win the women's title and not spend that long on court all tournament.

Schiavone wins the French Open Final

I watched the faces of the two players as they were waiting to come onto court for the final and you could see who was the more relaxed. Francesca Schiavone looked to embrace the occasion but Sam Stosur was tense. It was a tension she never really lost apart from 3 games early in the second set when she took a 4 - 1 lead. That was the only time we saw the woman who had beaten both Justine Henin and Serena Williams in earlier rounds. On the other hand, it was a great display by Schiavone who played to her full potential and got her tactics spot on.

Young British rising star Laura Robson has apologised for remarks made in the lastes issue of British Vogue.

“Some of the tennis girls, they’re sluts. They go with every guy and make such a bad name for themselves - and you don’t want to be known for stuff like that. You want to be more discreet,” Robson had said.

Laura Robson, who won the Junior Wimbledon title in 2008 later said, “I still have a lot to learn both on and off the court, and clearly I need to be a lot more careful about how silly remarks may come across when taken out of context.”

“I would just like to say a big sorry to anyone that I may have offended in an interview published recently. I made a totally inappropriate, throwaway comment without considering the consequences.”
