Justine Henin Retires due to elbow injury

It is a sad day for women's tennis as an injury sustained at Wimbledon has now forced Justine Henin into early retirement.

Justine was always gutsy, never intimidated by the big hitters depite her size and played with great flair and variety. Earlier on in her career she also remodelled her serve, something Hingis should have done. For her size, pound for pound she was probably one of the best ever players on the tour.

Australian Open 2011 Day 5 Justine Henin and Venus Williams beaten

3rd round selected results

Caroline Wozniacki (1) beat Dominika Cibulkova (29) 6-4 6-3
Svetlana Kuznetsova (2) beat Justine Henin (11) 6-4 7-6 (10-8)
Andrea Petkovic (30) beat Venus Williams (4) 1-0 Ret.
Maria Sharapova (14) beat Julia Goerges 4-6 6-4 6-4
Francesca Schiavone (6) beat Monica Niculescu 6-0 7-6 (7-2)

The results on day 5 certainly opened up the top half of the draw. With Svetlana Kuznetsova beating Justine Henin, although I think in the end Justine beat herself. Svetlana's ten points to win the tie break consisted of one or two winners and 8 unforced errors by Justine.

What were the crowd thinking of my booing Venus when she could not continue. At least she came out and tried.

Wimbledon women's tennis news Day 7

Kim Clijsters won the Belgian duel against Justine Henin. Justine is way short of the level she was at when she was winning Grand Slams.

Serena beat Maria. It was much closer than I had thought. I expected Serena to win quite comfortable.

I never saw Venus's match but was surprised she appeared to have so much trouble with someone ranked 92 in the world and especially on grass.

The biggest shock of the day saw the third seed Caroline Wozniacki thrashed by the 62nd ranked Petra Kvitova in 46 minutes.

Here are the complete 4th round results results.
Serena Williams (1) beat Maria Sharapova (16) 7-6 (11-9) 6-4

Kimiko Date Krumm on the French Open and why she prefers the ninties

I think women's tennis is more powerful now and more speedy compared to the 1990s," she said after her defeat against Groth.

"I think the 90s were more interesting. There are pluses and minuses. Before there were some plus points, now it's more speedy. It's difficult to say."

Asked whether she preferred greats like Steffi Graf to powerful modern stars she said: "It's a very difficult question. I like Steffi Graf. She was a super athlete.
