Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has today reiterated his desire to keep Shay Given at St James' Park during this transfer window. The Republic of Ireland international has been strongly linked with a move away from the club in recent days after his lawyer was quoted as saying "Shay is disillusioned with the situation at Newcastle".
Since then the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City have all been linked with a move for the 32-year old, however Magpies boss Kinnear has had this to say : "I would tell Mike (Ashley) that Shay is a must-stay ... He has never suggested he wants to go and, if he did, I would say it was a no-goer because of the position we are in. If you are in the top-six, who knows what can happen?
"But I believe we are still fighting relegation ... It is more important for me to keep my best players on board. Both Shay and Michael (Owen) are committed to the club ... As far as I’m concerned, Shay is untouchable." Although Kinnear has once again stated that Given will not be leaving the club this month, I personally feel, should Man City come in with a decent offer of around £10 million, Shay will be on his way to Eastlands
That's just the way it is in the transfer market at the moment. City are the only club who are going to spend big money in the window and once Mark Hughes sets his sights on a player, he is more than likely going to get his man. Shay has been a terrific servant to Newcastle. He has spent more than ten years on Tyneside and I am sure the majority of fans will understand he needs/wants to move on in his career.
