Chelsea are keeping tabs on Newcastle United striker Michael Owen. The England international looks certain to leave St James' Park in January with his contract due to expire next summer. Magpies boss Joe Kinnear is ready to cash in on the former Liverpool striker once the transfer window opens and Chelsea are understood to be monitoring the situation.
The 28-year old has been heavily linked with a move away from Newcastle in recent weeks with Liverpool and Tottenham also interested, however Chelsea now look favourites to secure his signature. It is believed that Chelsea will need to cough up just £3 million for the one time winner of the prestigious Ballon d'Or.
Blues boss Luis Filipe Scolari is desperate to bring a new striker to Stamford Bridge and Owen is now seen as a possible acquisition. There is no doubting Owen is still a top class striker. As he showed at the weekend, he is still capable of performing at the highest level and I personally think he would prove real value for money should Chelsea snap him up for just £3 million.
