Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is preparing to dip into the market with a £16 million bid for West Ham United pair Matthew Upson and Robert Green. With the Hammers currently in a spot of financial trouble it has been speculated that Gianfranco Zola will need to sell several of big name players if he wants to make any additions to his squad in January.
Redknapp is looking to strengthen his squad once the transfer window opens and he is likely to have funds available to do so. Green, 28, has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane for some time now as current Spurs number one Heurelho Gomes continues to come in for criticism for his less than convincing performances between the sticks for the North London club.
Meanwhile, Upson, 29, could also be on his way out of Upton Park. The former Arsenal defender has be one of the Hammers top performers over the past 18 months and has caught the eye of England manager Fabio Capello. Redknapp is keen to bring Upson to Spurs to provide necessary cover for Ledley King, who continues to struggle with a knee injury.
Personally, I think this would prove to be a smart bit of business by Spurs. Both players are well capable of performing at the highest level and another positive is the fact they are both English. It's a shame that Zola will be forced to sell in January because over the past few weeks his side have started to look quite decent.
